Why Repetition is Powerful in Writing (and How Authors Can Get it Right)

Is it ever okay to repeat the same word or phrase in your writing?

Absolutely!

Unintentional repetition is something that authors are (quite rightly) warned to watch out for, particularly in fiction. It’s one of the 20 common writing mistakes I go through in Editing Essentials.

Intentional repetition, however, is a powerful tool. Authors use it to make their points more memorable in non-fiction or to draw attention to something in fiction. Poets use repetition for effect, too. You can probably think of plenty of poems, or even children’s books, that do this.

I’ll run through some examples of intentional repetition shortly, but first, let’s look at how to deal with repetition that you don’t intend.
