If you're struggling with energy, inspiration, or just the whole process of sitting down to write, there are loads of things you can do.

One of those is to let AI give you a helping hand.

I'm not suggesting you have AI write for you.

AI isn't particularly good at drafting fiction. It can produce something passable, but the whole point of AI is that it creates the average of any given type of text. And you probably don't want to be average!

However, I've found AI is really handy for brainstorming type tasks. This is a great way to use the instant responses and customisation that AI offers to get yourself moving on a writing project.

Here are five simple but powerful prompts you might like to try. They work in ChatGPT, Claude, or any similar chat-based AI tool.

Where I mention notes, you can upload these as a .pdf (or many other formats) or copy-and-paste them after the prompt.

Prompt #1:

Read these rough notes for a [novel/story] and give me 10 questions to consider as I develop this idea further.

Prompt #2:

Give me 10 short writing prompts (a single phrase or sentence) that could spark ideas for a [genre] novel.

Prompt #3:

I'd like to write about [theme/idea/location/etc]. Give me 10 short questions to consider.

Prompt #4:

I'm stuck on this scene in progress. Give me 5 different options for what to write next, based on what I've already written.

Prompt #5:

Give me 10 interesting words that would work for creative writing prompts in the [genre] genre.

I know some writers (for a range of reasons) feel very strongly against AI, whereas others are comfortable using it more extensively than I am.
