Taking time off from writing this summer ... or looking for a summer project?

Hello!

If you're in England like me, it definitely feels like summer's here, with a heatwave last week, warm weather this week, and schools breaking up for the summer holidays on Friday.

In other areas, I know schools have already finished for the summer, and even if you don't have kids/grandkids, you might still have that sense of "school's out" at this time of year!

Understandably, some writers like to take a (full or partial) break from writing over the summer. I know I'll be doing less writing than usual, especially with several trips planned with my kids.

Other writers have more writing time, or want a change of pace with their writing ... which can make summer a great time for a new project.

Maybe over the next six weeks or so, you could:

  • Write a short story
  • Take a course or class
  • Enter a writing competition
  • Edit something you wrote earlier this year

... or anything that makes sense for you.

If you want to take a break, go for it! Having some time off from writing can help you come back refreshed in a month or two.

But if summer feels like a good time to dig into your writing, pick a project (or a milestone on a bigger piece) that you could complete in the next six weeks or so.

Not sure what to work on? Fill in the Aliventures survey and select "Zero to Story" as your freebie. It's a three-week guided course that takes you through writing a piece of flash fiction and a short story. (You can go at your own pace, so you could spread it across six weeks if you like.)

Alternatively, pick "Editing Essentials" as your freebie if you've got a draft that you want to rework, or "Supercharge Your Writing" if you're keen to get into a solid writing routine this summer.

Your answers in the survey help me figure out what topics to tackle here in the newsletter and on the Aliventures blog, and they also guide new resources I create (like all the newsletter freebies linked to in the yellow highlighted bit below). ๐Ÿ‘‡

Happy writing,

Ali

P.S. If you already filled out the survey, thanks so much! I've emailed you a link & special code to download the resource you chose for free. I missed the code off a few of the initial emails ๐Ÿคฆ ... I think I've contacted everyone affected, but if you're having any issues with the download or didn't get an email at all, just hit "reply" and I'll get it sorted out. :-)

Hello! What's holding you back with your novel? A lot of writers tell me that they just "don't have enough time" to write. And I absolutely get it: my life is packed full, too, and I often wish I had just a bit more free time each day. But I also hear from plenty of writers who do have a good amount of time ... and they struggle to sit down and get words on the page. Just "having time" isn't enough. And although writing a novel is a big commitment, it doesn't require a crazy amount of time....

Hello! Quick heads-up: Writers' Cafe closes at the end of tomorrow (or possibly today if we run out of places!) and won't re-open until September. There are still a few places left. Check it out: aliventures.com/writers-cafe Do you struggle to focus when you're working on your novel or short stories? Maybe you're intenting to write for an hour, but you find yourself "warming up" by scrolling social media or news, then you manage a few sentences before getting distracted again. This is really...
